Why Every Kitchen Should Have Fruit Cobbler Mix

By James Olson

A lot of people think of dessert as the thing that brings balance to a meal at the end of the day. However, some cooks want to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen if they make the meals more than once a week. What they may not realize that fruit cobbler mix does not have to be reserved for deep dish pies.

While cobblers are the hot and hearty pies that make some salivate, these have many variations that are not necessarily high in calories. These may be served with or without ice cream on the side and some people do not even miss things like caramel sauce. One advantage of making these at home is the ability to control portions so one does not have to feel so guilty.

Probably the most popular squash is the zucchini, also known as Italian squash. Like the carrot, there is a slightly sweet flavor that lends itself well to breakfast bread and some pastries. These also cook into a soft texture that is easy to disguise. Zucchini bread sold in most coffee shops is a good example of this.

This crumble is something that is being used often in other desserts, like cake and cinnamon crumb muffins. Easy donuts can be made by cutting raw premade biscuits and cooking in deep fryer until brown. Once drained, cover with glaze, followed by crumb mixture. Cobbler mixture can also add a little spice to savory side dishes like apple stuffing or honey cornbread.

Although most mixes are flour, spice, and sugar, there are many ways to add to the mix before it goes into the oven. Mixing in cooked oats is good for the digestive system and can lower cholesterol. For more flavor and nutritional value, chopped nuts like almonds, pecans, and walnuts can also make the dessert more filling.

Chopped nuts may be mixed in the cobbler mix for more texture and flavor. Most people like to add sliced or chopped almonds, macadamia nuts, or pecan halves. Also, substituting melted butter with canola oil cuts back on the saturated fat and cholesterol. While more expensive, coconut oil is also a popular choice for baking sweets.

This mix can also be baked and used as a flavorful crumble used to top oatmeal, ice cream, or yogurt. One low calorie dessert that is ideal for warm weather is the fruit and yogurt parfait. By layering the crumble with fruit and yogurt in a bowl or glass, a treat can be made in minutes. It can also be added to pan fried apples or bananas.

Anyone who has ever made a fruit cobbler knows that it is one of the easiest desserts to make. Some like to save time by cooking their fruit in a skillet or adding canned pie filling before placing mixture in an oven. This can also be a convenient snack for those who like having someone sweet while on the go. It can be healthier than most candy treats by adding dried cranberries and walnuts for more sustenance.
