By Sharron Cantu

Painful and swollen ankles and feet is a problem very familiar to podiatrists. In most cases the origin of the problem can be traced to the wearing of inappropriate shoes but in many other cases patients suffer from conditions such as flat feet. A surprising number of patients will benefit from the use of special insoles. This arch support orthotics helps patients to maintain a proper posture and this often provide almost immediate relief.

Low or non existent insteps lead to a variety of foot problems. Many sufferers cannot stand on tip toes and they experience intense pain if they have to stand for long periods of time. Their feet and ankles tend to swell up in hot weather and many sufferers also experience constant lower back pain. Their shoes wear unevenly and they struggle to find footwear that is wide enough.

Flat feet cannot be cured. However, the use of insoles can help sufferers. These devices are specially designed to support the arches of the feet. This provides relief of the symptoms and allows sufferers to function normally. They are available freely and it is not necessary to get a prescription. People with malformed feet may need specially made devices but most people benefit from ready made products.

There are some surgeons that have attempted to correct flat feet by means of surgery. In such cases an artificial insert is placed in the ankle bone. The majority of podiatrists will not attempt this surgery. They warn that the operation is dangerous and risky. If anything goes wrong, and they warn that the chances are great, the patient will suffer extreme pain for the rest of his life.

While insoles can do much to help prevent pain, people with flat feet are also encouraged to do exercises that will strengthen the ligaments in the feet and ankles and improve the flexibility of the muscles. Walking barefoot, preferably in sand, running on the toes and regularly stretching the toes and feet will all contribute towards this goal.

All babies have flat feet. The arches only develop at a later stage but in some cases they simply never develop at all. There are other causes for flat feet that develop at a later stage. Obese people are very likely to suffer from flat feet. Those with arthritis are also at risk. The tendons in the ankles often weaken with age and this may lead to flat feet in the elderly.

There are steps that can be taken to prevent the arches from falling. It is imperative to wear the correct shoes at all times. Shoes should always provide proper support and there should be room for the toes to move. Women, especially, should try not to wear high heels for long periods. Sportspeople should also make sure that their footwear is designed to distribute their weight evenly.

Chronic foot pain can make it difficult for people to move around freely. Insoles can do much to help people with flat feet to relieve pain and discomfort. Care should be taken, however, to buy from reputable manufacturers only. If in doubt, advice from a podiatrist should be sought.
