Botox Your Way To A Refreshed Face

By Marlene Ataine

Botox Cosmetic has for years retained the title as the most commonly performed "non-surgical" cosmetic procedure in the United States, based on its ease of use and consistently good cosmetic results. Botox Cosmetic is an injected liquid used to treat frown lines, squint and smile lines, nasal crunch lines, and horizontal forehead wrinkles. It is used to target the muscles underneath the skin. As a result, a more youthful appearance is achieved. When injected into a small facial muscle, it doesn't travel anywhere else in the body. Again, Botox treatments are non-invasive and non-permanent. A treatment will wear off within 3 to 6 months.

It's not surprising that Botox is so popular. With an exceptional safety record over the past twenty years, and a price point that is very comfortable and relatively cheap compared with alternatives. Botox is produced in a lab by a bacterium called clostridium botulinum and it has been purified under very strict controlled conditions.

Not surprisingly in these super competitive times we live in, men are now turning to the power of Botox to look younger. When you look at the numbers, the trend is obvious and only growing. The numbers are quite impressive. Some industry reports have estimated that the numbers have tripled in the past six years. At that time, that was about a half a million men, or roughly 10% of all Botox injections.

A lot of reasons are cited to explain the large growing segment of the market that is now looking for youth enhancing procedures. One main reason is that a lot of men are being introduced to it by their wives, who are more aware and sensitive to the impact of frown lines or those deep forehead lines that can make them look much older. Men are starting to appreciate that looking younger and feeling more refreshed has an impact on their lives.

Are there any people who should not receive Botox?

For a number of reasons, pregnant women, nursing mothers, or patients with neuromuscular diseases like myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or AML, should not use Botox. Patients who are allergic to human albumin, which is different than an egg allergy, should not use Botox. It is not recommended in pregnancy or nursing because it has not been tested.

Although not required, your doctor may numb the area of the injection prior to administering your Botox injections. The procedure will likely take around ten minutes and you can return to daily activities shortly afterwards.

BOTOX treatments are generally quite affordable, which is one of the main reasons for the procedure's international popularity. Depending on the nature of the treatment, a BOTOX session will usually cost between $300 and $400 per syringe. Every four to six months, patients will have to return to have another procedure in order to maintain their results.
